The 2nd National Conference for English Language Teaching Professionals – ELTAM Day 2016

The 2nd National Conference for English Language Teaching Professionals – ELTAM Day 2016 was held at the Faculty of Philology in Niksic on May 7, 2016. It gathered about 130 language teaching professionals from all levels and different institutions. The participants of the conference were welcomed by H.E. Margaret Ann Uyehara, U.S. Ambassador to Montenegro, H.E. Ian Whitting, British Ambassador to Montenegro, Dragan Bogojevic, Dean of the Faculty of Philology, Vanja Madzgalj, Country Director of the British Council, Mubera Kurpejovic, Deputy Minister for Higher Education at the Ministry of Education, Ljiljana Subotic, Senior Advisor in the Bureau for Education Services and Dragana Radoman, President of the English Language Teachers’ Association of Montenegro ELTAM. They all pointed out the importance of English language learning not only in our country but around the globe.
Conference participants enjoyed and learned from eminent plenary speakers. Christopher Hastings, U.S. English Language Fellow, talked about the importance of motivation in the language classroom; Svetlana Kandybovich outlined 12 professional practices in teachers’ professional development; Adrian Tennant spoke about the importance of teaching language not grammar; Mark Andrews from SOL presented his ideas how to include British monarchy into our classrooms; and Igor Lakic gave his views on methods of English language teaching.
Apart from plenary sessions, teachers actively participated in numerous workshops: Teaching spoken grammar and Storytelling in the classroom – Christopher Hastings, Just a textbook – Adrian Tennant, What’s in a passport and why? What does it tell us about ourselves? – Mark Andrews and Shaping the way we teach English – Dragana Radoman and Milka Cerovic in cooperation with Marija Vukicevic, Tatjana Kujovic, Denisa Dacic and Nerma Dobricanin.

The U.S. Embassy Podgorica, Pearson Belgrade, Strana Knjiga Niksic, Educational Centre Podgorica, Skola Stranih Jezika Waves Budva and British Council provided books and materials for the participants. Branislav Ceranic became the lucky winner of a teacher training course in Devon, UK, provided by SOL (Sharing One Language).
