The 3rd ELTAM Annual Conference for English Language Teaching Professionals ELTAM Day 2017

The 3rd ELTAM Annual Conference for English Language Teaching Professionals ELTAM Day 2017 was held at the Faculty of Philology in Niksic on May 13, 2017. It gathered about 160 language teaching professionals from all levels and different institutions. The participants of the conference were welcomed by Ms Sonja Nenezic, Vice Dean for Education at the Faculty of Philology Niksic, Mr Mark Weinberg, Public Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy Podgorica, Dusanka Popovic, Head of the Department for Continuous Professional Development in the Bureau for Education Services, Ms Vanja Madzgalj, Country Director of the British Council and Dragana Radoman, President of the English Language Teachers’ Association of Montenegro ELTAM.

Conference participants enjoyed and learned from eminent plenary speakers. Ms Jen MacArthur, Regional English Language Officer, talked about the importance of engaging students in community-service learning to reach curricular objectives while Dusanka Popovic described the upgraded Handbook for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for teachers of all subjects in preschool, primary, secondary and TVET schools in Montenegro.

Dragana Filipovic from Pearson pointed out that English has become a global language. It is learnt and spoken all around the world. We will look into what it means for other languages and nations and how we can use this fact to our advantage. Draginja Jeftic, teacher at the Faculty of Philology, emphasized characteristics and practices of 21st century learning and teaching.

Milka Cerovic from ELTAM presented Resources of the European Centre for Modern Languages (ECML) and announced that in cooperation with the Bureau for Education Services and other foreign language teachers’ associations in Montenegro, ELTAM acts as the National Relay for the European Day of Languages.

Apart from plenary sessions, teachers actively participated in numerous workshops: 13 Ways of Using Poetry in the EFL Classroom  and  Wordless Books Aren’t Only for Young Learners – Jen MacArthur; Engage Me and I Learn – Sanja Conjagic from SOL; We Are Montenegrins, Innit? – Dragana Filipovic, Pearson; Speaking Practice in the ELT Classroom – Tanja Djonlaga and Natalija Savicević Mrvaljevic, ELTAM; Effective EFL Activities – Draginja Jeftic, Faculty of Philology; Making Classroom Activities More Learning Rich – Svetlana Kandybovich, British Council and Be Understood – Giving Clear Instructions – Bozidar Bukilic, British Council.

The U.S. Embassy Podgorica, Pearson Belgrade, Strana Knjiga Niksic, Educational Centre Podgorica, Skola Stranih Jezika Waves Budva, British Council and English language teachers Mirjana and Milovan Djukanovic provided books and materials for the participants. Edita Zvrko and Dragana Giljanovic became the lucky winners of two teacher training courses provided by SOL (Sharing One Language).
